A Reminder
Another Wednesday at track, 5 miles running combined with strength training. We gathered afterwards to listen to anouncements, this week our Honoree Captain Ann, delivered some sad news about an honorree for another team, she read the following:
"I'm sad to pass on the news that TNT Honoree Erika Arredondo has passed away. She became an Honoree for the mountain bike team in 2003, and she's been an honoree for many other teams since then (walk, run). You may have met her when she came to volunteer in our office. She gave it her all in battling her NHL and Hodgkin's disease (yes, both). Below is what Randy Ksar sent this morning, as well as the blog post, below, from her husband, Chris.
Sleeping Beauty My Gator Pie is now in heaven, safe with her Mom. I love you with all my heart and I always will.

Up a bit, down a bit, back a bit, forward a bit......
In life it all comes down to the
perfect fit, when something is right it just becomes part of you. It was a tough 1hr 30min workout, to get the right fit on my new bike. Unfortunately by the time it was over the sky was overcast and there was no time to get a real ride. But there is always next week :-)
6th Annual Louie Triathlon

Today was the 6th Annual Louie Tri, it used to be known as the Iron Team Olympic distance Practice Triathlon, however 6 years ago a few days before the event,
Louie Bonupa passed away after losing his battle with Luekemia. Now is held every year in his memory.
I had a very early started to the day, I carpooled up to Treasure Island with Trista and Sandy arriving just around 6:30am. The weather was actually very good, though cold it was clear and sunny. I had been dreading the swim, having already done the Tri California's Treasure Island Triathlon, back in November i was not looking forward to going back into that water. As it happens the water was deemed to be too cold at a very chilly 48F, not wanting have people end-up with hypothermia the swim was cancelled, though this was a great disappointed to us all, we made the best of it. The swim was replaced by an extra 3 mile run.

Following the first run was a 6 loops around Treasure Island with many, many, many turns. I managed to keep a quick pace on the ride and both the runs, leaving me with a finish time of 2hrs 37minutes.

First challenging ride of 2007
It was a very cold morning so much the Swimming pool at Mountain View High School at frozen, this caused the team swim to be canceled, due to this the team ride was earlier, but I was was late. So I started off on my own ride, so where else to go then up to Skyline again! This time I took a different route, I thought it time I revisited "Old Page Mill Road", which I had not
ridden up since the "Tour De Max" metric century back last August. It Old Page Mill Road, is a long winding road with a about six miles of climbing.
Once I reached the Skyline, I started to realize exactly how cold it was out, there was even some ice on the road. I then headed south on Skyline, which is a still quite a climb with the
occasional roller for relief.
Finally I hit Highway 9, I don't like to go down this way that often it can be a busy and dangerous descent, with high speeds and
hairpin bends, but today was the day :-) So I started downhill, the traffic wasn't too bad and I managed to keep under 25
mhp. The road is very shaded which left it with the
occasional icy spot. As I got further down I got colder and colder to the point I was uncontrollably shivering.
Picture this, 20mph downhill on a icy road, desperately trying to keep the bike in straight and steady, so I started to pedal harder to get my legs warmed up again. The road
flattened out and brightened up and I was able to get to
Saratoga without incident. My first stop was Starbucks for a hot drink :-) Then it was just plain sailing back to Mountain View High School.

Back in the water
First team swim practice of year, I seemed to be drinking all the water in the pool tonight. Logically if I drank enough water, I would be able to just running across the bottom of the pool, however I don't think I drink that much in a decade, I was quickly left feeling bloated. Not a bad night of swimming a part from the bloated feeling I had at the end of it :-)

Ironteam - Gunderson to Bailey Road...

The first team ride of the year, we started out at Gunderson High school and a out and back ride towards Bailey Road, via Almaden Expressway.
The total distance was around 40 miles, there was a tremendous headwind on the road today making the beginning which was mostly up hill feel easier that the than downhill on the way back, but overall a good fast ride as it was mostly flat.

Ironteam - Spinerval
This morning we were at De Anza College for a Spinerval set, which consisted of 20 minutes of Spinning followed by 10 minutes of running, four times. Overall this made for a tough 2hr workout.

Why?

First track practice of the year, not training for the past couple of weeks has taken its toll, running around the track tonight was tough. At the end of the
tortures track practice, one of our team's
Honoree's Jens spoke a few words. I've know Jens since the beginning of last year and I have trained a long aside him, he is an inspiring
athlete and person. I expected his talk to be about his own battle with Lymphoma, but instead this was the story of his brother in-law
Harmut, he spoke of him last summer and that he was fighting
Leukemia. I hadn't heard anything more since then and just assumed that he would make it through, it is possible to beat these things right? Unfortunately not always,
Harmut passed away last
September.
This is why we still all raise funds, the problem is not yet solved but is getting better with the research being done.
